Chapter 21

Search for Truth

Across town, Detective Barnes walked through the doors of Credit Union Bank, gnawing on a toothpick that hung from the side of his mouth. The manila folder in his grasp he kept close to his person. The authorities were hungry for a solid lead. Considering they’d previously witnessed Marcus Renegat making transactions at the bank, he hoped this lead would pan out. Prior to Marcus’s disappearance, he was a suspect in the murders that had begun plaguing the city of Clarkston months ago. Detective Barnes was hell-bent on finding out what transactions Marcus had made at this bank, if indeed he had made any. Maybe his financial records would lead to some sort of clue. They needed something to go on.

The fact that so far things were looking as bleak as they had when the crisis began was disparaging, to say the least. Detective Barnes was at his wits’ end. Someone at this bank was going to help him regardless of how he had to acquire the intel. Barnes looked around, carefully observing his surroundings. There was one person in particular he sought. Once his eyes had settled on the man he needed to see, the detective headed straight for him. It was a normal day. Busy as usual. Many of the townspeople, especially state and government workers, banked at this credit union. At least ten people were waiting in line to see a teller, yet only two windows were open. Fortunately, the person he needed to see was the manager. The head guy got to leave his cubicle every so often and stand around in the lobby, asking customers if he could lend a hand.

“Is anyone here to open an account?” asked the rather short middle-aged African American man with the clean-shaven face and waves as deep as the ocean. He buttoned the jacket of his blue suit before flashing a smile as he greeted customers nearing the counter.

Barnes spoke up. “I sure could use some help.”

The bank manager’s eyes lit up when he saw his old friend. “Detective Barnes.”

“How’s it been, Gregory?”

Both extended a hand for a firm handshake.

“I’ve been pretty good. How about yourself, Detective?”

“I can’t complain,” Barnes replied.

“What can I help you with? Are you ready to switch over to Credit Union Bank? Do business where it’s better?” the other man said with open arms.

“Let’s talk.” Detective Barnes didn’t want to give away his reason for being there. He wanted to get Gregory back into his office so that their conversation would be private.

“Let’s step into my office.”

The bank manager led the way back to his spacious corner office. It was evident the job paid well. Gregory got comfortable in the plush black reclining office chair behind his neatly organized desk. “So, what is it you need, Detective?”

Detective Barnes closed the door behind them. “I need some account information on a Marcus Renegat and possibly a Richard Sobieski.”

“Aw, man, you know I can’t give you that without a subpoena, a warrant, or something.
